Success which includes feature film and TV credits as an actor. Since those heady 60s days, Gladys Knight has achieved success over five decades. Gaye, of course, had a number one record with it the following year on the back of his In The Groove album success. It was to be third time lucky, however, because the Gladys/Pips version made number two on the Billboard chart. The song had been recorded first by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles and then by Marvin Gaye but label boss Gordy didn’t like either version. The Pips initially consisted of Gladys and her brother, sister and two cousins before morphing into Gladys Knight & the Pips.Īfter some tentative success, the group released their fourth single for Motown, I Heard It Through The Grapevine, in 1967. However, it was her emergence on Berry Gordy’s Motown (Tamla Motown outside of the US) label that provided the career breakthrough. The Atlanta, Georgia-born singer has seven Grammy Awards to her name and over 70 albums (in all formats) for labels like Vee Jay, Verve, Columbia, MCA and Buddah (with whom she had four top-10 UK singles). Gladys has issued a couple of albums since that visit – her latest Where My Heart Begins came out last year – and remains as popular as ever in the UK. She was last here for her “Farewell Tour” – with Tito Jackson and Dionne Warwick – in 2009. It is no surprise that the show by the “Empress of Soul” Gladys Knight, in Sage Gateshead’s Hall 1 on Friday, is a sell-out (returns may be available) but it would be remiss to fail to acknowledge her return to Tyneside after a six-year absence. Whilst the musical centre of gravity may be more than 300 miles away in Glastonbury, there is still plenty of live music to catch locally over the next few days.
